A Fine Day: A Successful Prostate Cancer UK WFLA Inter League Cup at Coleshill Town

This was the fifth occasion that the Walking Football Leagues’ Alliance held their annual Inter League Cup. This years event was sponsored by Prostate Cancer UK, to which we give many thanks for that generous sponsorship. Thanks also goes to the St. John’s Ambulance staff who provided medical cover on the day. There wouldn’t be many tournament organisers providing this excellent medical cover.

It was good to put a couple of faces to names, Andy Madden (Secretary Dorset WFL) and Clive Billingham (Surrey FA WFL).

Despite one league failing to field a squad in the Over 70’s, and another withdrawing, we fortunately, replaced one team, to make it five teams in that age category.

Our referees for the day were Neil Brady, Ian Brennan, Stan Jackson, Ian Liversidge, Robin Ogilvie, and of course our own Referees Appointments Office, Mike Willmore. They all did an excellent job officiating this prestigious national tournament and must be some of the best officials in walking football.

Thanks also goes to our Treasurer Derek Murr, and Mike’s partner Karen for their work on the day registering all the teams.

The weather throughout the day was fine and dry, apart from a shower lasting just a few minutes. Based upon the feedback received from the teams, the day’s events were a great success.

The teams were from all corners of the country and provided some high-quality football. All fixtures were played in the correct spirit. The standard of walking football increases every year. A special mention must be made to the goalkeepers, in 55 games, 14 were goalless draws, thanks to these excellent custodians!
