This was the fifth year that the WFLA held their League Champions Cup. Disappointingly, we had five withdrawals prior to the ‘Finals’ day this year, some far too near the day. This caused constant problems with the change of fixtures and allocation of referees. Thankfully, we managed to replace three of the teams, but the Over 65’s and Over 70’s age categories only had five teams competing instead of the normal six.
This years event was again played at the Coleshill FC’s Pack Meadow Stadium and teams from all around the country seemed to enjoy the occasion. The weather was hot and sunny with just a few minutes of rain. Thanks to the staff at Coleshill and the new owners, who provided some very welcome food and drinks.
The standard of walking football increases year-on-year, and there was some excellent football on show. The standard of goalkeeping is remarkable considering the ages involved. It was good to see some old faces who have supported the competition since the WFLA’s inception.
This growing sport must have saved the NHS millions, with it’s physical and mental health benefits on the ageing population!
Thanks to our excellent squad of referees, some of the best in the country, Dave Bent, Matt Howells, Stan Jackson, Kevin Lambert, Mick Lowley and Mike Willmore who is also the WFLA Referees Appointments Officer.
Thanks also to the others members of the WFLA Committee. Colin Strong, Tony Norton and Derek Murr for all their hard work in ensuring this competition had a successful outcome.
