OUR HISTORY (2019 to 2025)

2024

At the 30th November 2024 the WFLA membership stood at 29 member leagues and records showed that 2024 exceeded the 2023 entries, across all competitions.

The WFLA National Cup attracted 295 teams across all of the age ranges that competed in the initial ‘Locals’ Round ending up with 35 Finalists across all of the age ranges. The Finals being held over the weekend of the 7th and 8th September 2024.

The WFLA Inter League Cup attracted 41 teams across all of the age ranges with the Finals held over the weekend of the 11th and 12th May 2024.

The WFLA League Champions Cup attracted 40 teams across all of the age ranges with the Finals held over the weekend of the 15th and 16th June 2024.

Once again, like 2023, all WFLA cup competition Finals were held at Redditch United FC, Valley Stadium, Bromsgrove Road, Redditch, Worcs B97 4AU.

For 2024 all WFLA Finals were sponsored by the National Walking Football Alliance (‘NWFA’) and were supported by the England Walking Football Community (‘EWFC’), Colchester Trophies, St. John Ambulance and Redditch United FC.

After the WFLA National Cup Grand Finals in September, the WFLA Referee Appointments Officer and Vice Chairman Mick Hill, resigned his positions. However, Mick continued to offer help and guidance to the WFLA and he agreed to be appointed as the ‘WFLA Consultant Life Member’, see ‘News’ Item here.

Also, in September: the WFLA announced that one of their top referees, Mike Willmore, agreed to become the new WFLA Referees’ Appointments Officer, see ‘News’ item here. Mike succeeded Mick Hill. Also, Colin Strong organiser of the Birmingham County WFL and a WFLA committee member was appointed as the WFLA Vice Chairman, see ‘News’ item here.

In October the WFLA made the decision to put the WFLA National Cup on hold and decided to put their wealth of knowledge, support and backing behind the FA’s National Walking Football Cup. The WFLA Inter League and WFLA Champions League Cup Competitions for 2025 would proceed as planned.

The WFLA’s Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday the 27th November 2024. It was agreed that:

  • The WFLA Constitution be updated to ensure it met with the five principles promoted by Sport England.
  • The Competition playing rules be updated.
  • The entry fee for the two 2025 WFLA Cup Competitions would be £75 per team for the ‘Finals’ only. There would be no entry fee for any possible ‘preliminary rounds’.
  • The incumbent Committee Members were voted en bloc to manage the WFLA for 2025.

In December 2024, Breast Cancer UK became a partner with the WFLA and agreed to sponsor the 2025 WFLA Inter League Cup. This competition was renamed ‘Breast Cancer UK WFLA Inter League Cup’ for 2025, See ‘News’ item here.

Also, in December 2024, Prostate Cancer UK became a partner with the WFLA and agreed to sponsor the 2025 WFLA League Champions Cup. This competition was renamed ‘Prostate Cancer UK WFLA League Champions Cup’ for 2025. See ‘News’ item here.
